How to Get Started in Advertising

So you’ve decided you want to work in advertising! Maybe you realized your love for Super Bowl commercials runs deep. Or you fell for the magic of Mad Men. Or maybe you hate most of the ads you see and want to make better ones. Either way, you’re in for a treat of a job.

Getting started can feel overwhelming, so I’m going to break down some of the basic steps for you.

  1. Find your role - What do you want to do? Copywriting? Art direction? There are a ton of possibilities for a career in advertising, so find what appeals to you.

  2. Start building a portfolio - If you want to be a creative, a portfolio is a must. Start making spec work and get your site together.

  3. Network - Reach out and make connections. Getting a job in advertising is a whole lot easier when you know someone (or know someone who knows someone) at the agency you’re applying to.

  4. Get to know the industry - Start studying the work that’s already out in the world. Follow agencies you admire. Just start immersing yourself in what agencies do and you’ll feel much more prepared when you get into it yourself.

The video goes much more in-depth on those steps, so definitely give that a watch. And if you like the video, don’t forget to subscribe to my channel for portfolio tips, career advice, and more helpful stuff for working in advertising.
