How to Be a Great Intern

Congratulations! Landing an internship is a big step. Now let’s talk about how you can turn that step into a leap and make the most of your internship. And maybe even get hired when it’s over.

Ask questions.
You're an intern. It's totally normal to not know everything! When appropriate, ask whatever you need to. Try to answer your own questions first, since that’s how you’ll learn. But any time you need help or just want the perspective of a pro, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask.

Get to know the rest of the team.
I know, it’s super tempting to just stick with the rest of your intern group, but try to branch out when you can. Go for a coffee run with another team member or schedule 1:1s with some of your favorite people at the agency. Get to know them, their career journey, and make some authentic connections. And it’s awesome to talk to people in other departments whose jobs you don’t know as much about.

Take notes.
There will be so much information flying at you and it's easy to get lost, so write down as much you can. If you take notes in meetings, you could come in clutch when someone else on the team is trying to remember something that was talked about.

Be proactive.
Instead of sitting around waiting for something to do, go find something to do. Ask if anyone needs help or try to find something that you think can help the agency in some way.

Quick tips:

  • Be ready for anything - Late nights, last-minute client deadlines, and impromptu dance parties.

  • Connect with your fellow interns and other team members on LinkedIn

  • Practice self-care: Stay in-tune with your body and mind to know when it’s time to rest and take it easy.

  • Be okay with messing up - Again, you’re an intern. No one is expecting perfection!
